Interior Design PhDs and Research Pathways

How doctoral study connects to interior design, the difference between a dedicated interior design doctorate and a broader design or human-environment doctorate, and what to ask before applying.

Last reviewed 3 November 2026

Doctoral study in interior design is uncommon compared with bachelor’s and master’s study, and the options are varied.

Two kinds of doctorate

  • A dedicated interior design doctorate names interior design (or interior environments) as its field.
  • A broader design, architecture or human-environment doctorate with a documented interior research pathway, where interior design research is one area of a wider program.

This directory records which of the two a program is, and includes a program only when an official university page documents the interior design focus.

What a research degree is

A research doctorate prepares students to produce original research, usually with a dissertation and a supervisor. It is not a training program for professional practice, and a PhD does not substitute for professional examination or registration.

Before you apply

Confirm the research areas of the faculty, whether an advisor is available in your area, the funding offered (assistantships and stipends vary), the prior degree expected, and whether a research proposal is required. Browse Interior design PhDs and research programs.
