Interior architecture and interior design overlap heavily. Many programs use the two names for closely related curricula, and several CIDA-accredited programs carry “interior architecture” in their titles.
What interior architecture often emphasizes
Programs titled interior architecture tend to emphasize the existing building as the starting point: adaptive reuse, spatial and structural thinking, construction detailing and the relationship between interior and building envelope. Programs titled interior design may place more weight on furnishings, finishes and client-facing practice. The labels do not predict the curriculum, so read the course list.
What it does not mean
An interior architecture degree does not by itself qualify a graduate as an architect. Architect licensure is set by each state’s licensing board and typically involves a professional architecture degree or equivalent, supervised experience and examination. The national coordinating body is NCARB.
How the directory treats it
Interior architecture programs are included when the title or an official curriculum page documents an interior-focused program. General architecture degrees without a named interior pathway are not listed. Browse Interior architecture programs.
