Online Interior Design Education

How online and hybrid interior design programs work, what to check about campus attendance, state availability, accreditation and equipment, and what a fully online label should mean.

Last reviewed 3 November 2026

Online programs range from single certificate courses to full degrees. Interior design is studio-based, so formats vary.

Delivery is not one thing

A program can be on campus, fully online, hybrid, or online with required campus attendance. Intensity (full time, part time, flexible) and teaching mode (live, asynchronous, mixed) are separate. This directory labels a program fully online only when no campus attendance is required.

Accreditation and online study

Program accreditation covers a named program and location. The CIDA register lists some programs delivered online or through virtual campuses; check that the specific online program is the one named, not just the institution.

Where you can enroll

Some online providers cannot enroll students from every state. Where a school publishes restrictions, the listing says so. An online provider is not assumed to have a campus in any state.

Equipment and software

Expect to supply a capable computer and to buy or subscribe to drafting and visualization software. Some programs require drafting tools or physical model-making. Check the program’s published requirements.

Noncredit online courses

Many online interior design and decorating courses award a school-issued certificate of completion. These are listed with that label and are not equivalent to a degree or to professional certification.
